[Thinkpad] TP600E batteries

I finally bit the bullet and bought a secondary battery. New, sealed,
Japanese market unit, via eBay.

So it arrived and I put it in, left it overnight. The battery applet still
didn't show it. "Hmm", sez I. So I put it in another ThinkPad (since the
one it was in I didn't want to reboot right then), and it showed up.

Just to be sure, I unplugged the machine and removed the primary battery,
and it stayed up. Put the primary battery back in and removed the
secondary, and it shut off.

Put the primary back in and hit the power button and it powered up.

What am I missing here? Is the machine not smart enough to say "Look at
that, two batteries, I'll use whichever has power"? Or is there an order --
once it starts using the secondary, the primary can't be used? If so, I
can't carry a second primary and switch back without a reboot, which is too
bad.

Thanks for any info anyone can provide.
