Just speculation on my part, but ...
1394 and USB2 have equal merits. 1394, however, dominates the
Digital Video market. What does IBM know about Digital Video?
Furthermore, the home and prosumer DV market is plagued with
all sorts of growing pains and incompatibilities. Intractable
ones that teams of people work on for months and still are not
able to straighten out. None of the problems is strictly 1394
related, 1394 is just as reliable for video as it is for hard
drives (i.e. very reliable). But once IBM puts a 1394 port on
its computers, IBM becomes a target to solve these problems.
