these could all be tightly coupled issues. perhaps the timeout is
waiting-for-a-network-response? .... sounds bad. I'd try killing all of
the network settings (first delete the IP settings / protocols, then
actually remove the card's driver), rebooting a couple of times, and then
reconfiguring it.
