Hello,
One of the things I did not like about W95/W98/ME was the freezing that
happened when the computer could not find a network resource like a
disk share. NT/W2K does not suffer from this problem.
I would check in the control panel under the network icon. Select the
properties of the TCP/IP protocol object that lists the NIC card.
I bet the bad IP address is listed in the IP Address tab. Select the
Obtain IP Address from DHCP server setting (or is it the Automagically
setting?).
Also check the settings for the NIC card under the same network icon.
Check that the card is recognized when inserted. Also be aware that
Windows will treat the same card inserted in each slot as a separate
device. I heard of one person who set it up so inserting the NIC
in the top slot would set it up for the office network and the
bottom slot would set it up for the home network.
