Hello,
My ThinkPad T23 arrived this morning.
It came with everything expected, including a swappable floppy diskette
drive which was not mentioned on PC Connection's web site.
There were two minor surprises:
1. While the IBM box was sealed, the bag inside of it containing the
ThinkPad had been opened. Messily.
2. In the accompanying literature was a Certificate of Authenticity/
Software License for Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition. This matched
the Windows XP Home Edition Product Key sticker on the bottom of the
unit.
When booted up, though, the familiar Windows 2000 Professional splash
screen appeared. I suspect #1 and #2 may be related to a post-assembly
hard disk drive swap-out
There was no recovery disc included with the system, instead it had an
~800MB "recovery partition." I'm not particularly fond of these and called
EZ Serv to request a recovery disc, but their database was down. Which was
quite surprising since the person I spoke with was typing all my information
into something.
In any case, I have half-a-dozen licenses left for Microsoft Windows XP
Professional Edition and plan on installing that.
Physically, the laptop is like any other T23.
It may be my imagination, but for some reason the keyboard doesn't feel
as "crisp" as my 770X's... more "mushy," if you know what I mean. But
that may be the result of typing on IBM and Avant Stellar keyboards all
day.
The screen appears to have a couple of stuck pixels, one dark and one
light. That's somewhat annoying--a 1024x768 TFT active-matrix screen
isn't exactly the apex of LCD manufacturing difficulty these days, but
survivable. Besides, the technician at EZ Serv said I need to have at
least eight stuck pixels in order to get a replacement screen.
Well, that's all for now. If anything interesting pops up I'll inform the
list.
Regards,
Aryeh Goretsky
