Many thanks again to all who replied with various suggestions re backing
up files on a small windows LAN.
I looked at the various options and have settled for "Replicator" from
Karen's Power tools. It does exactly what I am trying to do, and if you
load a copy onto each computer it facilitates file transfer and
synchronization in any direction (you just back up the other two
computers {in my case} from the one you last worked on) and is
simplicity itself to use. It also includes the obviously sensible
option to copy to a directory only those files which have been changed !
The only thing that needs to be remembered is to enable "file sharing"
on the directories that you want to copy to/from !
For anyone running a small windows LAN and wanting to synchronize files
between the various computers, especially those (like me) who may not
have an in depth knowledge of command prompts etc, etc, I would highly
recommend this little utility. The download time is just a few minutes
using a dial-up connection, and the whole thing installed and worked
perfectly on three computers running Win XP pro at the first attempt.
I forget exactly who it was who suggested this utility, but many thanks
indeed to who ever it was. You've solved this particular problem for me
in double quick time.
