The butterfly model (701C and 701CS) required that the expansion thingy
(like a thick port replicator) be attached to use the serial port, and
the floppy drive was external. This would detract from a neat and
compact arrangement which I suspect may be a requirement?
A good 360C or 755C would probably be nearly ideal, very cheap and very
rugged, but may be slightly difficult to find. The 760EL's would be
good as well, and seem to still be fairly plentiful on Ebay, are in your
price range, and would also be more usable as a 'real computer' if
drastic need arose.
I have several old Thinkpads which I am holding onto for similar duty.
One day I will use one or more for data collection, most probably with a
weather station.
Jim
What came to mind was a 360C or a 755C.
