William, do the following things and it will work (no overlay necessary):

1) Check BIOS rev of your 560Z and update to latest rev if needed.
2) Format the 40GB HD in another laptop or get a 2.5"-to-3.5" drive converter
and use a desktop PC
to format it.
3) Install your OS on it and enjoy!

I had a similar situation with my 560Z and it worked. Good luck!
