[Thinkpad] TP 600E Configuration Utility

Problems, problems . . .

My HD crashed, so I used the recovery disk on the warranty HD I
received. However the Configuration Utility fails. If I click
on Thinkpad from the Program menu, and select Configuration,
a small splash screen appears for about 2 seconds, then exits
silently. The same occurs if I run the file TP98.EXE from a
command prompt.

I then tried to install the latest and greatest 600E Configuration
Utility UTTPCW32.EXE (d/l from IBM site) but this fails on exit
with error "program UTTPCW32.EXE performed an illegal operation;
Contact vendor"

The diagnostic details:

 UTTPCW32 caused an invalid page fault in
module <unknown> at 0000:30303032.

I'd appreciate help to get either of these working because I cannot
configure the hardware without the utility.
