Your source is right about using Partition Magic or any similar program. You
can create a new partition with XP's Disk Management, but you can't resize
an existing partition.
But a question: How will this partitioning facilitate backup? You may not
need to do it at all. Say a bit more about how you plan to use the
partitioning, and maybe an easier plan will reveal itself.
For example, you could just back up the C:\Documents and Settings\Russ (or
whatever your username is) folder. That's pretty much the modern equivalent
of using a separate partition for your data.
