[Thinkpad] T23 Win2k - problem with pcmcia compact flash

While everything so far has been going well with the PC Connection T23,
today I hit a snag.

Put a cf card in one of the little passive adapters and plugged it into a
pcmcia slot. Logged in as a power user (not superuser). Got the tones,
then window popped up about new hardware, and then another window about
pcmcia cf adapter or something of the sort.

However, the system froze for several seconds, then unlocked. The
periodic freezes repeat. Explorer shows no drive, device manager shows
nothing.

Logged off, went to an admin account, tried opening the "install new
hardware" which also froze up hunting for new p&p devices.

I do get the warning when I manually eject the card, even if I click the
eject tray icon first.

Anyone seen this or know of a fix? This laptop is of limited utility to
me if I can't snag images from my digital camera!
