And the power cord plug is a lot more likely to get pulled accidentally
on a ThinkPad than on a desktop system...

Chances of IBM service being able to determine that your system board
was fried from a failed BIOS upgrade vs. from some other malady are
slim, so IBM is just protecting itself from paying to fix your
misfortune under warranty.
