Another question, please:
I believe there are other list members with 770 EDs. Does anyone have any
problems with the rubberized surface bubbling and eventually peeling away as a
result of contact with one's hands while typing?
I had this happen once, and the computer had to be sent for certain repairs
under warranty, and they also replaced the affected surface without charge; but
a couple of years have gone by, and it's happened all over again. To be sure,
it doesn't affect the functioning of the laptop, but it sure looks ugly, and I
(perhaps oddly) feel rather embarrassed about people seeing it.
I suppose there's no remedy but to replace it again, if I care enough, and
to pay whatever exorbitant charge this will cost. But is there any way of
treating the surface when new so that this doesn't happen again? Clearly this
is an inherent flaw in the material used for this model, and I can't go on
replacing it every time it happens.
Also happening for the second time is that the white letters on the keys
are wearing off the keys I use most often: that is, letters like S, D, L, and
other common home-row keys. Is there a way of preventing this happening?
The money I paid for this computer, I don't expect things like this to
happen, so I feel a bit disappointed with the laptop in some ways.
I will never again buy a computer with a rubberized surface. It may look
and feel better than a straight plastic surface, but is not acceptable if it
peels away like this. Are I.B.M. still using this material, and is it a known
problem?
Thanks for any advice anyone can offer.
Regards,
Michael Edwards.
