CF in PCMCIA adapters can be very temperamental to get installed. From
my recent experience trying to set several up it seems that the OS
attempts to install drivers for the actual CF card, not the adapter.
This means that you go through a 'New Hardware Found' process each time
you insert a new CF card, and the drivers installed are often unique to
the particular CF card model. This is not what I expected to see at
all. In any event, I found this process to be painful. Less so than
installing a CD-RW drive and software, anyway.

Another drawback to CF is that it is fairly limiting in storage
capacity. I mean, if you want to store another 1GB of files you'd have
to fork out another few hundred bucks for the 2nd CF card, whereas you'd
just need $1-5 for more CD-R or CD-RW media. And you need separate
adapters for each system that you use CF on (unless you go with a USB CF
reader and carry it around, which would work well).

There are certainly situations where CF would work awesome, but I wanted
to point out that they just aren't a direct substitute for CD-R/RW media.
