To clarify, the problem is not the lack of the NIC driver (which is included
in WIN98), but the failure of the TP 600X to recognize that a NIC is inserted
in the PC Card slot. In a normal install, as soon as you insert the card,
the TP beeps and a window opens saying "Windows has found new hardware".
This does not happen. I assume some driver (like the PCI communications
device driver) is missing because it differs on the 600X compared to the
600E whose recovery disk I was forced to use.

The TP600X works fine with the OEM-supplied HD, and the same NIC I am using
to configure the new HD. I am just trying to bring up a new (spare) HD.

More enlightenment invited.
