[Thinkpad] [TP765, 560, others] cheap memory, and a question

Hi,

A colleague was looking for a new memory chip for his 765L (same chip as for
560 series and others), we discovered that by entering Kahlon.com through
pricewatch.com one can get the requisite 64meg EDO module for 65% the kahlon
website price, a total of $13 including delivery (even to Hawaii). This is
practically free.

Now, the question. After struggling to get all this memory to be recognized
on is machine, I finally downloaded the 765L tech reference manual and
discovered what many here likely knew all along, that one had to flip a
switch on the daughterboard to keep memory from being halved. Umm, was
there any reason for that bizarre design? Other laptops from the same era
don't have similar requirements. (BTW, this is *not* mentioned in the
machine's regular user's manual...)
