Are you sure it's the fan? Various models of Hitachi HDDs produce a periodic
clunking or clinking noise. In several articles, IBM says it's normal, but after
lots of complaints eventually posted a firmware update to suppress the noise.
The T40 is not listed as one of the affected models, but that might just be due
to lack of updating. You can read about it and listen to a sample at
