Incidentally, I'm still running Win2K SP2 without the Microsoft
patches (which perhaps require SP3) on my TP600E. No
infections. I AM using various security strategies (or are
they accidents?), as outlined earlier. Without, for example,
ZoneAlarm or some similar product, I'm sure disaster would have
arrived.

The following article bolsters the theory that keeping up to
date with Microsoft patches is not only not necessary, it is
insufficient:
