sounds to me the HDD is failing..
you CAN load XP on the 240 (though i suggest NOT) by
sticking the HDD in the 770, booting to DOS and copying the
CAB files to the HDD to a separate partition..
then loading XP from the HDD..

i suggest W2k on the 240 as it runs much faster and there is
little that XP adds (IMO) to the 240 that W2k does not..

when i did the above, i put the 240 HDD in my A30p, booted
to W2k with an XP CD in the CD drive and copied it that
way..
faster than DOS but with the hardware you have at hand, that
seems to be best..

i tried both XP and W2k in several 240's and IMO (again!) XP
is too slow..
