This question came up on the HP palmtop mailing list and the conclusion
was that the PC card slot was more durable than most of the rest of the
machine. I know that some MAC powerbooks had problems with the card
eject mechanism but I blame that on the fact that they had the eject
function done electrically (like a MAC floppy drive).

Considering my request for compact flash adapters in bulk I would point
out that I have several (4 or 5) computers with card slots so I often
need to use several CF cards at once. Thus for me it makes sense to have
almost as many adapters as I have cards.
