I have a 760EL without a battery and it works well.

Subject: [Thinkpad] 760EL - Should it Work w/o a Battery?

Hi All,

All my batteries are dead, including the one I just bought off eBay. :( I
tried removing the battery and running off AC, but it doesn't work. My old
755 worked just fine w/ no battery. Is it just my 760 that's this way, or
did IBM in their infinite wisdom make all 760s like this?

Has anyone tried soldering a 12VDC supply to the battery input lug? Any
other suggestions for getting it running? I've got to take a trip and I'm
pretty desperate for a working laptop.

Thanks!
JDM
