Hello Victoria,

I have a 765D 9546-U9H which I bought back in 1997. At the time it came
out, it was IBM's greatest and fastest. I liked it very much back then.
It has video IN/OUT like today's Axxp machines, which worked so-so due
to low processor speed. I recall the following problems: (1) The machine
has a DSP that serves both as a sound card and as a modem. The modem
never really worked convincingly and incidentally I received 90 CAD last
year from a class action suit that was brought against IBM for that
reason. Since it's only a 28.8 kbps modem anyway, it's better to disable
it and use a PC Card modem if required. (2) The PCMCIA chipset is rather
uncommon and no WinNT/2000/XP drivers were ever made for it. This means
it will work in 16-bit mode under those operating systems, no CardBus.
Everything works under Win98, but I don't recommend that to anyone under
any circumstances. Apart from the CardBus issue, the machine ran very
nicely under Win2000 (the memory is maxed at 88 MB I believe). Also,
CardBus drivers exist for Linux (though the kernel drivers don't work;
one has to install the pcmcia-cs drivers).

I am in the (lengthy) process of turning the 765D into a Linux web
server. The processor speed will be sufficient and it takes up very
little space in a drawer!

What else do you want to know?

Greetings
Alban
