Apologies if you've already given us this information, but I don't have the
first couple of messages in the discussion. Just going on a fishing expedition
here:

What is the full seven-digit/letter model number of your 600x?

Did the Windows 98 CD and boot floppy come along with the TP from the previous
owner, or did you get them elsewhere?
Do you know if Windows 98 was preinstalled when the computer was new?
The CD is the original Windows 98, not 98SE, correct? What is the CD actually
titled?
Is the "boot floppy" a "Startup Disk for Windows 98" -- which should not only
boot the system but also enable use of the CD.

Did you check to see if pressing F12 when powering on will bring up a
boot-order-selection screen? If not, try going into Easy Setup with F1 again.
I've never seen the rough icons you describe, but even if you don't know what
the icons mean, the very first one is probably "Config". If you select that, you
should see a Boot Order F12 icon which you can set to enable. (You can choose
the order you want in Easy Setup anyway, but enabling F12 will allow you to do
it later without having to go into ES.)

You do not have a recovery CD, correct? Have you seen this article?
