[Thinkpad] start-up / shutdown problem

I have a TP 755Cs 9545-KOE. Don't know much about the machine and
have not been able to find specific help from the ibm site (badly
need a manual). The battery is dead and has been removed.
Theoretically the power supply is in good shape but it has not been
tested by me with a dirrerent machine.

When booting up I may have to try up to 15 times before success.
Sometimes I can only hear the hd come on, lights are checked, but
nothing happens oon screen. At other times I get a pale blank screen.
Finally other noises will come through and it actually boots to
MS-DOS 6.22. Machine will stay up for hours when not disturbed.
Sometimes when being used though, a small movement or vibration will
cause it to shut off and I must repeat the entire process. When it
has been unplugged for some time it usually boots right up, but is
prone to shutting down at the slightest touch.

Can anyone suggest what might be the problem here? I am stumped. Many
