[Thinkpad] 256MB stick in a 600e

Hello
 
I have been given a 256MB PC100 memory stick from a friend.
 
I have put it in my 600E and all I get on boot is a blank screen.
 
It does not display the memory at the start so I don't think it is doing
a memory count or it can not do the memory count.
 
I have tried the memory in both slots with the same result.
 
I was thinking it could be faulty memory but could it be that I need to
upgrade the bios or something on my computer.
