[Thinkpad] 560x/560z memory questions

Hi,

I'm a noob here. Recently bought a couple of Thinkpads, a 560x and a 560z cheap. I've been researching upgrades, which is how I stumbled upon this group. However, I have not been able to find definitive answers to these questions:

1) Is the main memory (the standard 32 mb memory on the 560x's motherboard) upgradeable? I know from reading the archives that on some models, the memory on the motherboard uses a standard socket (identical to the socket for memory expansions) for the main memory and is easily upgradeable. If so, 64mb modules are relatively cheap and easy to find and I would like to upgrade the main memory on the 560x to 64mb (will total 128mb; currently at its spec'd max of 96mb). I've found some 128mb EDO RAM modules, but they're $140!

2) Is it possible to use PC66 or PC100 SDRAM in the 560z, instead of EDO RAM? I'm pretty sure not - I've seen some references that say the hardware has to specifically support SDRAM. I didn't see anything specific on Intel's site - the 560z board is a 440bx - but I would like to know if anyone has actually tried this or has a 560z and a PC66 module they could try out. I suspect if it did work, it would disable the EDO RAM main memory on the motherboard, but would still like to try this. But I don't want to spend the money on SDRAM just to try it out.

3) I've seen some references to memory caching problems on some Thinkpads, causing performance decreases when adding memory. Is this a hardware or software problem?

4) Are there any other upgrade options I could check into for either of these laptops? I build my own desktops and can use a soldering iron, and am not afraid to experiment - just don't have a lot of extra time or money :-)

All answers appreciated!

Jack
