Thanks to the helpful pointers from the list the A20 ethernet works.
As suggested I opened up the hatches underneath and found a Dell 25 Mb
RAM card (with space for another!) and a 3-Com ethernet-modem mini PCI
card (the first mini PCI I had ever seen).
Since the card was present I decided to remove and replace it in case
something wasn't connecting.
After replacing it (the cable connections were difficult to make) I
replaced the battery and started the machine up.
Windows XP discovered the card and installed drivers for ethernet, modem
and network. I started Internet explorer and was immediately directed
the the MSN.com home page.
Not usually what I would consider a desirable outcome but it did
demonstrate that the hardware works.
