No I was just a little slow in putting the pieces together.
I'm not smart enough to argue (at least not about this machine).
It really clicked when Matt pointed out that the ethernet in the dock is
just a pass through device (which makes sense when you think about it).
When I found the ethernet port on the back of the computer I understood
what Bruce had said about a mini PCI card (don't have much experience
with them given my neo-luddite preference for the 560 series).
After that it was straightforward enough to troubleshoot the hardware.
I actually recommended the thinkpad to my friend because I knew I could
get help here.
