This happened to my Dad's I series (1161-43U) with Windows ME.
To make it worse it happened while he was trying to initialize the OS
and all the groovy little animated tchotchkies were squeezed into the
smaller area covering up such boring things as the pull down selections
of language, time zone and ultimately the "accept" button to start the OS.
By using the arrow keys I was able to work through most of the
selections (had "Estonian" selected at one point) but couldn't get to
the "accept" button before some cheery little graphic covered it up.
He got the thinkpad with the idea that he should expand his horizons
beyond MAC OS 9 but I think his run in with Windows ME has put that idea
on indefinite hold.
Now I've got the laptop and after running through recovery it's been
behaving itself. I'm going to set it up to scan 35 mm slides for my sister.
