If memory serves, the PC card consortium renamed
what were then called "PCMCIA cards" to "PC cards"
at or around the time the 32-bit PCMCIA cards were
introduced. (I guess they felt "PC card" sounded more
user-friendly.)
Not surprisingly, many people (including some card
and computer manufacturers) used PCMCIA to refer
to the older 16-bit cards, and PC card to refer to the
32-bit cards.
So, in spite of the usage the consortium *wanted*
people to follow, I think Robert is right about how
the terms were used in practice.
