I use Network Stumbler when needed. My T40 came with Intel Pro/Wireless
LAN 2100 3B, and the IBM Access Connection utility comes with
qcwlicon.exe (see \Program Files\ThinkPad\ConnectUtilities directory).
When it's running, it shows an icon on the tray that changes color -
green, yellow or red depending on signal strength. Double clicking it
brings up an applet that allows you to find available wlans and to
connect to one. I only use Access Connection to configure the wlan for
the first time, but normally I don't run Access Connection (and disabled
its services and startup programs) because I only switch from work lan
to home wlan/lan. Instead, I wrote a little batch script that toggles
the network connection by that enabling the relevant device and
disabling the unused network device to save battery (using XP's
devcon.exe). With this, when the wlan card is enabled, it simply uses
the last wlan profile that it was connected. XP's wireless zero config
service is also disabled.

On a related topic, how much do a/b/g/ cards cost nowadays? Is there a
802.11b/g only card and is it true that the T40 can only use IBM cards?
Thanks.
