I hear much talk in the Thinkpad communities (here, IBM's site, ebay
auctions, etc.) about "spindles". I know "spindle" as the thing your
brake rotor bolts onto... What is the definition of "spindle" as it
relates to Thinkpads, or other laptops (hereinafter referred to as
"craptops")?

Me too!

Built-in harddrive and optical (CD, DVD, CDRW, whatever).

My current laptop is a 600E (and I couldn't have been more pleased with
it), and I just don't have the motivation to upgrade.

But shave a couple of pounds off even the same package, and
I be a buyer.

Realistically, what would I want? Clock speeds of course
would be higher, but additional raw performance isn't a priority. Same
screen, or maybe one notch up in resolution with a *slightly* larger
screen, would be fine. Longer battery life. External floppy. (The
600E let's you use the floppy externally, or install it in place of the
CD. I use the floppy with some regularity, but I haven't installed it
in years.)

I wouldn't want the footprint to be much larger. The screen
is adequate, but wouldn't be great as a desktop replacement, but if
you've ever booked a flight on "sardine air," you know that bigger isn't
always better in a laptop.

Built-in wi-fi would be nice (but I can live with pcmcia).
Two pcmcia slots would be nice, but I can live with one.

Three pounds, optical drive, track-point, but preferably
no ultra-pad, with the classic IBM reliablilty and durability. I'd be a
buyer, right now!

Like I said, I just haven't had a reason to upgrade.

Anybody at IBM listening?
