I know. That's why I said "out of a laptop's speaker outputs". The
quality of the sound coming out of the laptops speaker outputs is not
going to be nearly as good as from a stand-alone DVD player. Besides,
you don't have standard audio outputs on a laptop. You'd need a special
cable which will be equivalent to a significant portion of the cost of a
new basic DVD player.

Which would likely cost about as much as a basic DVD player these days
($40).

There are some times where it is better to use the 'standard' stuff
instead of trying to make something work where it isn't optimum. Sure,
you can MAKE it work but how many hoops are you willing to jump through
and what comprimises are you willing to make just to 'make it work'?
Heck, the convenience of not having to move the laptop into place and
hook up the cords each time (power, video out, audio out) is
justification enough to spend $40 on a real DVD player. It's not like
these things are $300 any more...
