[Thinkpad] 760XL Modem Problem

I have an old 760XL that I gave to a friend. It's running Win98SE with the
appropriate IBM updates and drivers. I installed a 3Com (USR) XJ1560 PCMCIA
modem and her AOL software (ugh..I know) and here's the problem. The modem
install goes fine, I shutdown and reboot and Windows "rediscovers" the modem
and installs another instance of it. So now there's two modems installed and
it's taking up two ports which of one doesn't work (conflict). If I
uninstall it, it will come back after a cold reboot but not a warm restart.
Anyone ever had the same or a similar problem...and what was the fix? This
is driving me nuts...now I remember why I HATED Win9x...
