[OT] Dead soldered CMOS battery (was:Re: [Thinkpad] 240x - won't boot, blank screen, no beeps - help

Has anyone here managed to attach a new battery (possibly an external one)
to a dead CMOS battery in this kind of situation? I ask because I have a
laptop (not a ThinkPad) which has a dead soldered-on CMOS battery which I
would like to resuscitate.
