This problem has been faced by many a T30 owner - I've had the problem twice
on my t30.

It is a system board failure due to a bad batch of boards (very big batch it
seems) supplied to IBM. Contact IBM and they will replace it under warranty.

Friend of mine has installed second 256 MB ram chip, total 512 MB, but T30
can recognize only 256 MB.

We have exchanged with the same as was inside and memory is working in first
slot. Any experience with this problem?
