[Thinkpad] Firmware Update

Talked to the same high level tech today about my old 60GB/5400 drive and
the firmware "situation".

According to him I was right to try and apply the 7.1 firmware to my drive,
as the readme adviced me to. It should have been supported. He also
elludes to the fact that it was probably a faulty drive, because some techs
at IBM got a model of my drive and flashed it with the 7.1 firmware without
an incident. I'm a bit on the fence about this, as I don't think my drive
was defect - either that or other people have drives from the same lot #. I
figure I got an "earlier" version or something that caused me trouble, but
whatever...

He also replied that the Revision 8 of the firmware
(http://www-306.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?lndocid=MIGR-41008)
is correctly posted in that it will support the 5K80 and 7K60 drives. Disk
12 supports:
- Version A5BA for HTS5480xxM9AT00 (HGST)
- Version A6BA for HTS726060M9AT00 (HGST)
Have I installed it, to hold him to his word? No. Nor will I until I get
back my other HD from the RMA cycle! I want to have a backup available
before I attempt this. Again.

Also, since I've sent this out, there's a BIOS upgrade release for the
R50/p, T41/p, and T40/p - jumps up to version 3.00 (3.00c actually for me)
so it might help people that have been having trouble with their machines...
it DID include a new way to set bootable drives that is far more flexible
than the old 2.x version, so for me it was worth it.

Cheers!
