Bruce:

Looks like SP2 might be out soon. This should 'increase' the
reliability of XP, however it is still very large and 'needs' the latest
and greatest hardware. I recommend installing/upgrading only if your
machine is/was built with XP in mind. The 600E systems were built for
Windows98, and my A22p was built with Windows98SE/W2K in mind. Of
course, my system has added memory and I upgraded to a larger and faster
hard drive and (in theory) should have no problems upgrading to XP Pro
(I would not consider installing XP Home for my purposes.) However,
before installing I would get the SP1 CD from Microsoft or have someone
burn a copy of it for me. I would install XP, install both a firewall
and anti-virus software package before bringing it onto the Internet. I
would definately have a backup strategy in place, and backup the 'raw'
system before installing any new software to allow the reconstruction to
a known state.
BTW, I don't use Microsoft based operating systems on a regular basis,
but find the discussion about upgrading to XP very interesting, because
the same thing happens with other operating systems, such as Linux. One
should not upgrade without a backout method, such as a full system
backup with system restore disks.
Note: I don't 'bash' XP as it is the best effort of Microsoft, and if
used properly is very stable (something that cannot be said of some
versions of Windows.)
