[Thinkpad] new R40 startup problem

Hi all!
I just got an R40 thinkpad. It started into preinstalled win xp
nicely, but didnīt accept drivers for the installed wifi-card. Well I
thought that might be because it needed a restart. I turned computer
off using start->turn off and everything was fine.

But:
Now I cannot get it start again. The LCD stays off, battery power ist
high. The fan runs for a short time after hitting the power key. The
"on"-led is on, if I insert a cd, the drive recognizes it, but nothing
else happens.

I tried hitting FN-F7 as well as all kinds of other combinations
several times.

The hardware guide says one should check the system boarc (or rather
have it checked). Am I maybe being stupid about getting the machine to
start? (Having no manual but only a troubleshooting guide there might
be something easy I am missing).

All frustrated wishing for help,

    Sven
