[Thinkpad] Importing data (dv camcorder) via 1394

Has anyone done this succesfully with a recent TP? I am attempting this with a T40p and have not suceeded using either MS Movie Maker or Ulead VS7 SE.
The card is recognized in device mgr, but in general the cam is not. On one, and only one occasion the dv device (Panasonic dv852 camcorder) was detected, but not data as tranferred and the capture software crashed.
I've seen no errors nor are there conflicts in device manager.
 
How do I proceed from here?
