I, too, am interested in CPU upgrades for my 600E and 600X. I know the
600E uses MMC-2 modules and runs at 66MHz. Conventional wisdom is that the
best CPU for that is the 400MHz PII.
The only thing stopping a faster Celeron from working is the BIOS, and I
fully expect that a Celeron will NOT run in a 600E. However, if I can find
one under $10, I still plan to test it. With the bus running at 66MHz,
none of the other problems should appear.
If one had a LOT of time available, and lots of diagnostic hardware, and
wanted to hack assembly language, one could patch the BIOS. It seems more
worthwhile to just buy a faster machine, though.

You can buy a CD-RW/DVD-ROM combo drive.

I'm not sure what you mean. I know at least in Windows, one cannot hot
swap the UltraSlimBay at all. Warm swaps are possible if you "turn off"
the device first. I know on my 600X that even if the UltraSlimBay battery
is supposedly completely discharged, popping it out makes the machine turn
off instantly. Popping out a drive could damage either it or the
mainboard.
Let us all know what you try!
Chris
