I can tell you that I have an older 6GB/4200 drive and a modern 40GB/5400
and I've put them both in the same USB2 enclosures: the 40GB is faster when
moving large amounts of data, but not anything earthshattering. In fact, it
could be due to a larger on-drive buffer or some other technology (like
ATA-6 versus whatever is on the 6GB) but there was a bit more pop to the
newer drive.
