Hi Andrew in Ann Arbor, This is shamanjp just over in Belleville. I bought a new desktop a couple weeks ago and went with an emachines. I got it at the Best Buy in Ann Arbor. I was told to shun HP/Compaq by a tech friend for one reason or another, high failure rate maybe? Anyway, the emachines has been working great, you may want to check them out. They seem to have good value for the price. Many of them have built in card readers, huge hard drives, and some even have DVD burners. I bought the T3265, which seemed quite a lot of machine for the price. I find myself enjoying XP as well.
I would go with an Athlon over a Celeron, and over a Pentium 4 as well for the performance vs. price, 512 memory is in my opinion very worthwhile, and unless you need a lot of "networking security" XP Home should be fine. Best of luck to you whatever you end up getting.

Questions:
Is the Athlon CPU more desirable than the Celeron?
Is the additional memory (512 vs. 256) worthwhile?
Should I pay an additional $75 to upgrade from XP Home to XP Pro?
Thanks to all
