I have two NetVistas - one for me (2.0 GHz P4 640Mb) and one for my wife
(1.8 GHz P4 256Mb). They are quiet, but I cannot compare them to others. I
do work with a Dell at work and it is also quiet. The fan on the dell works
all the time, the IBMs at home tend to run quiet, and every now and then the
fan turns on full force to cool the machine. But even so, it is still very
quiet. If I were to give one the edge, it is probably the Dell due to the
plastic case. The Dell machine at work (though high end) is encased in
plastic. I also work in a open office layout with a lot of white noise from
the air vents. This may tend to make the machine appear to be quieter - so
I don't know.
The largest comparison that I can see with Dells vs IBMs, is the IBMs are
more simply designed. From my experience, Compaqs, some HPs and Dells tend
to be propriety machines whereas Gateways have been quite standard (though I
am unsure right now). IBM has been propriety especially with the PS/2's and
shortly after them. But with current machines, IBM offers a very industry
compatible machine that are very easy to upgrade and tinker with.

Thanks for the reply George, could I expect that a nice new case from
IBM would be quiet?
One of the things that impressed me about the HP was that it was so
quiet that I had to press my ear to the case to hear it running. I've
since heard that the Dell is also quiet and if Dell can manage it I
expect IBM can.
I'll have to take a look at IBM's site, I'm not that concerned about
easy upgrading having realized that I might be better off to get a nicer
computer to start with and spend less time tinkering with it later
(hopefully working on paying jobs instead) but I am very impressed with
IBM's support for old systems.
