[Thinkpad] Dell Vs IBM laptops

With all due respect, this seems like an unreasonable debate. To me, this is like trying to compare a McDonalds Big Mac, with a burger from Ruths Chris Steak House. That is if Ruths Chris makes burgers, but you get the point.

A friend in the next condo has just taken delivery of a Dell 600M and I've been helping them set it up for the wireless Internet offered here. This machine has all the bells and whistles, and for the money they paid, is a fine laptop. But, it isn't in the same league as my coming up on five year old IBM 570. The keyboard is mush, the trackpoint wanders all over the place and is difficult to control, and the screen colors look like they have been dipped in a muddy river.

I doubt anyone at Dell would seriously say a 600M was in the same class as a T41. What they would say, I suspect, and with considerable justification, is that dollar for dollar they offered the "best" value, where "best" is defined in terms of what is really needed for most people.

Frankly I don't need an IBM, but right now IBM is about to do some work for me on this machine at no charge, even though it's 9 months past the end of the warranty! The problem is one I had a year ago and it's back. As they've tried three/four times to fix the problem I think it fair and reasonable they continue to try and fix it. This will be the second time it's been back for "free" work after the warranty period. That's why I've ordered a new X40 to replace this machine, and I bought this Thinkpad because my previous Thinkpad (black and white screen) had had many problems --- all instantly taken care of by IBM. Plus, I love the IBM keyboards.

Bottom line, if you want to watch your pennies, go for Dell. If you have a few extra bucks (and think of it in terms of probably three cents per hour of usage over the life of the machine) and want the pleasure of driving a Lexus instead of a Toyota, go for the Thinkpad.
