The linked page lists the x40 2386. It's captioned "warranty service
upgrades" and says you can "extend your service coverage period, upgrade
your level of service or both." I don't see any fine print that cuts back
on anything (other than that they charge tax). Please take a look at the
page and see if you have another view. http://tinyurl.com/23qpz

I've just about decided to buy the 2386-5gu. It has a 1.2g processor
(faster is better for not much more money), only 256mb ram (I'll buy
another 512mb from crucial and upgrade when 1gb are cheaper), 4-cell
battery (2.7 lbs v 3.1 is more important to me than 3.5 hrs v. 7.5 hrs; I
can always get a spare battery if necessary) and b wifi should be enough (I
don't use it much). I don't really need a portable optical drive. I have
a USB/Firewire enclosure for home use. For watching movies on flights, I
can compress a DVD to about 700mb and watch from the HDD.

I'm currently using an aged 570. Losing about 1.3 lbs and gaining lots of
processor power is appealing.

Hope that's sufficiently thrilling :-)
