[Thinkpad] Turn off touchpad buttons?

Is there any way to turn off the buttons for the touchpad? I have
disabled the touchpad itself, but the buttons still work and when I am
typing my palms hit them, causing the pointer to jump or do other
unexpected things (like deleting text I just typed). Currently using a
T40, although I have a T30 with the same problem.
