i've heard several reports (from people that i consider knowledgeable)
that the bayesian spam filters are relatively effective at countering that
nonsense. traditional keyword-based filters fail miserably.
to be honest i haven't trained my copy of spamassassin to use its bayesian
features at all - the 'standard stuff' [blocking certain ISPs, topics,
phony sender addresses, et cetera] has historically been enough to get rid
of almost all of the most bothersome spam.
IIRC Mozilla's bayesian filtering is pretty well supported, nowadays. and
pretty transparent to users.
