[Thinkpad] T41 squeals when lid is lowered??

Here's an odd question that I can't find an answer to on Google. My new T41
makes a squealing noise when I lower the lid - it sounds like microphone
feedback. It's clearly not mechanical in nature (it doesn't happen when you
move the lid when the machine is powered off.) The sound keeps going as
long as the lid is held down and appears to stop the machine from entering
standby.

The noise seems to start about when the "going to standby" beep usually
would have been emitted. Turning the speakers off stops the problem - oddly
enough selecting another input source other than the built-in mic does
*not* fix it.

Has anyone else seen this? (It's not subtle, btw)
