[Thinkpad] no drive/disk err when playing DVDs

I've been trying to play some movie DVDs on my W2K
t40's Matshita UJDA745 combo drive using WinDVD 5,
and all I get is "no drive/disk" messages from the
player. I tried a couple of other popular players
to no avail. I also updated to drive's firmware
and drivers to no avail. Any suggestions on how to
overcome this problems?
